Beautiful Dolls and Hagoita (羽子板 「はごいた」) of Ja·pa·n

Hanetsuki was a game that dates back to the 17th century, and even though the game itself is rarely played theses days, the wooden paddles – Hagoita were used to play it.
Now they serve more of an ornamental purpose and are usually made with beautiful, complex silk collages, auspicious symbols and lacquer. They are generally sold at hagota ichi (traditional fairs) during December, but I photographed them on my visit to one of the shrines in Tokyo, Japan.

Hagoita (羽子板 「はごいた」)

…of course I had to have one.. or more.. 😉
